This Coming Sunday's Sermon

"Following God"

Exodus 33:12:23

We live in a culture that prizes leaders and leadership abilities.  We value take-charge kind of people who can engender loyalty and motivate others.  In many lines of work, the leader’s ability to get people to follow him or her is one of the keys to success.

In the passage from Exodus, Moses beseeches God to "Show me your glory, I pray."  But God responds, "You cannot see my face; for no one shall see me and live."  Instead, God instructs Moses to stand in the cleft of a rock, and "I will cover you with my han until I have passed by; then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen."

Why did God not want Moses to see God's face?  Perhaps it is because to see God's face, Moses would have to be leading, rather than following, God.

We hope you will join us for worship at 10 o'clock on Sunday morning at the First Congregational Church of Stoughton, 76 Pierce Street.  We are an Open and Affirming Congregation of the United Church of Christ.  Everyone welcome!
