The Coming Sunday (and beyond)

30hrfamine

30 HOUR FAMINE:
MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLERS
TO GO HUNGRY
SO OTHERS WON'T HAVE TO

Every day, hunger kills as many as 11,000 kids under age 5. This weekend, middle and high school members of our Faith-4-Life Youth Group will by doing something about it by participating in
WorldVision's 30-Hour Famine.

The two-night lock-in begins this evening with dinner at six o'clock. The youth will then enter into an extended period without food (juice and water will be permitted) that they may better understand the problem of hunger. The weekend culminates on Sunday morning, when the famine participants will lead worship.

We ask your support of our young people and their efforts in the 30-Hour famine by contributing to hunger relief through WorldVision. If you have not already pledged to sponsor a participant, you will have an opportunity to make a contribution during worship this coming Sunday.

We also ask that you pray for our youth
as well as adult leaders Dana Barnes and Kevin Monahan
as they undertake this worthy effort!

Thank you!

Sunday School
During worship on Sunday February 26, our Sunday School students will take their classes upstairs in the sanctuary! Our class will focus on the lessons of Youth Group, as the Youth Group leads the congregation in worship and shares stories about the 30-hour Famine.

The nursery will remain be open downstairs for children up to age 3.
We are currently recruiting a couple more teachers for our next workshop rotation, "Easter: I'm a Believer" which will run from March 4 through April 1. If you are interested in teaching this rotation, please contact rotation coordinator Leanne Kerman LeanneK462@comcast.net).

All of the materials and lesson plans are supplied for you.

Lenten Bible Study
You are invited to
Student Pastor Lance Wiser's

LENTEN BIBLE STUDY

I invite you all to attend a Lenten Bible Study I am leading entitled "The Terrible Surprise of Hospitality." We will begin at 11:30 am and finish up before 1:00 pm on February 26, March 4, 11, 18, and 25.

On the first Sunday, I will give a presentation of my recent wonderful, yet jarring travels to the Holy Land. There is much to share! From the Holy sites of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs down to the sites affiliated with Jesus' ministry... From a day spent in the Israeli Holocaust museum, Yad Vashem, to a night spent in a Palestinian refugee camp... Come and participate in these stories.

On the subsequent Sundays, we will take a biblical story - two from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament - pertaining to hospitality and weave them into the narratives that have come out of this Holy Land experience, and to also see how they connect with our own lives.

It is my hope that this will be an engaging experience that will challenge our perception of the Holy Land, deepen our understanding of the Abrahamic Religions, and practice further what Christianity teaches us about hospitality.

I hope you will join us!

This study focuses on a fictional series of letters that were "written" on Good Friday immediately after the death of Jesus. The letters could not be mailed the next day, as it was the Sabbath. By Sunday, the world had changed. These "letters" are intended to teach and to provoke thought about the importance of Christ's resurrection.

These studies are not cumulative, so if you were not able to join us last week, please feel free to join us this week.

Interested in joining our church?
Want to have your child baptized?

Please join us at our next series of

Beginning in March, we will again be holding a series of Covenant

Classes for people who are interested in joining our church and for

parents who are interested in having their child baptized. The next

series will be held on March 4 and April 1 from 11:45 to 1:00 pm and on

March 18 and (for new members only) April 29 from 11:30 to 1:00 pm.

Parents who want their child baptized and are not regularly-attending

Active Members of the church are to attend these Covenant Classes

which will cover in depth the covenantal vows the parent(s) will be

making during the sacrament. Once the Covenant Classes have been

completed and the parents feel ready to carry out their covenantal

vows, a date for the baptism can be scheduled.

Because the baptismal vows parents make on behalf of their children are

almost identical to the vows new members make when they are received

into membership with our church, any persons interested in being

formally received as a member of the First Congregational Church of

Stoughton are also to attend these Covenant Classes. A fourth class for

prospective members only will cover subjects specific to membership,

including spiritual gifts assessment, opportunities for serving the church,

and the importance of stewardship.

New Members will be received during worship at a mutually convenient

date later this spring.

altar flowers

On Sunday morning when you are sitting in worship and see the beautiful altar flowers, have you ever thought you would like to sponsor them? Here is how you can! Located on the board outside of Fellowship Hall is a sign up poster made by Alyssa McGillicuddy!

Along with the poster are forms to fill out. We need your name and if the flowers are in honor, memory or celebration of someone. The cost to sponsor a standard arrangement is $25.00.

If you would like to make a special request, you can do so by contacting our church florist, Nancy Sullivan at 781-254-6261.  For special orders, we ask for at least a week's notice, and an additional cost may be incurred.

Checks can be made out to Nancy Sullivan, or if you would like it to be tax deductible, to the First Congregational Church with altar flowers on the memo line.

Once you have completed your form and enclosed your check, you can leave it in the church office or in the offering plate. If you have any questions you can contact Leanne Kerman (Chair of Deacons) or Gale DeBeneditto @781-344-4728.
